What to Know
Chicks singer Natalie Maines dove back into political hot water by insulting President Trump on social media. According to the 51-year-old country star, who angered some fans by criticizing President George W. Bush onstage in 2003, she had to post her latest hit twice because the initial message disappeared from Instagram.
“Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes,” she wrote. “This fugly slut is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything.”
The Justice Department — now headed by Trump’s former personal attorney — announced Monday that the Internal Revenue Service, as part of a settlement agreement over a leak of the president’s income tax returns, would give $1.7 billion of taxpayer money to a loosely defined “anti-weaponization fund” benefiting people who feel they’ve been wronged due to their political ideology.
Critics worry the fund could reward Trump supporters who attacked law enforcement officers and stormed the U.S. Capitol after Trump lost the 2020 election.
“My last post that called him a fugly slut got removed,” Maines continued. “We’ll see how long this one lasts.”
She added that Trump’s name is mentioned repeatedly in a document drop pertaining to the investigation of sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019. The president praised Epstein as a “terrific guy,” but denies any wrongdoing.
Much the way Maines divided fans by being critical of Bush 23 years ago when her band was known as the Dixie Chicks, The Grammy Award winner did it again Tuesday.
“Like she’s somebody!” an Instagram user going by Gerberdaisy2020 replied. “I used to like her music until she started broadcasting her opinions on the open stage. We don’t want to hear it. You all have no idea nor do you care how the middle class live and survive. Stick to your art.”
Fan LaurenMclean80 saw it differently.
“Yaaassss and I ain’t ready to make nice either!!” she wrote, paraphrasing the Dixie Chicks’ 2006 song “Not Ready to Make Nice.”
