ESPN's decision to honor Prince Harry with an ESPY award has sparked backlash from Mary Tillman, the mother of the late US soldier and NFL star Pat Tillman. It was announced on June 27, 2024, that the Duke of Sussex would receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPY Awards, recognizing his impact on the veteran community through the Invictus Games. But Mary was astounded by the news, saying, "I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award."
"There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans," the mother continued. "These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognized."
ESPN did reply to Mary's discontent in a statement. "ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, is honoring Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, specifically for the work of The Invictus Games Foundation as it celebrates its 10th year promoting healing through the power of sport for military service members and veterans around the world," it read. "While we understand not everyone will agree with all honorees selected for any award, the Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work, and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating."

People seemingly have mixed opinions, as some agree with Mary while others believe that Prince Harry is deserving of the award.
"It's bad when Tillman's own mother strongly disagrees with the recipient," one person said. "Probably because Harry escaped serving people to serve himself….and Tillman did the opposite and lost his life for it."
Another person commented: "How is he controversial and divisive?? He has always stood by his fellow veterans and has done more for British and American soldiers & veterans than anyone in the monarchy and most American politicians!! Let’s be honest!! I’m sure if Pat was still alive and the personality and his invictus spirit; Harry & Pat would have been friends!!"
