American-Born Italian Princess Evicted From Roman Villa Over Inheritance Dispute

The British royal family may be relieved some other royals beyond the United Kingdom’s borders are making headlines for their own family drama. This time the drama is taking place in Italy with an American-born princess. Princess Rita Jenrette Boncompagni Ludovisi was evicted from Casino dell'Aurora, a $533 million estate complete with a Caravaggio mural.

The princess was evicted because of a dispute with her late husband’s children. Prince Nicolo Boncompagni died in 2018 at the age of 77. The estate will be sold as part of his three sons’ inheritance.

Princess Rita called her eviction a "travesty" that is both "illegal" and "unnecessary." She believes it is "all about money, obviously." She went on to say "someone said it's because I'm a woman and I'm American — I don't know."

Before his death, Prince Nicolo and Princess Rita lived together at Casino dell'Aurora. The couple married in 2009. Tensions over ownership of the property began shortly after the prince's passing. The estate has been in the family since the early 1600s.

Prince Bante Boncompagni Ludovisi, one of Prince Nicolo’s sons, stated the home "needs renovations." He estimates these will cost around 11 million euros.

"The pipelines of water need to be restored and the frescoes are in danger," he explained, later adding the whole estate needs to be brought up to code.
