Ryan Reynolds opened up to friend and costar Hugh Jackman about the one of the best pieces of parenting advice he ever received. The duo star together in the film Deadpool & Wolverine which hits theaters in July 2024. Shawn Levy, the film's director, was the one who hit Ryan with a truth bomb that greatly impacted the way he parents.
Shawn told Ryan to be honest with his kids about his so-called failures and losses. We don’t always get what we want. It is important for kids to know this and learn how to cope with it.
"Shawn Levy actually told me something that stuck with me forever, that people tend to only talk about their wins. But I think it's really important for your kids in particular to know that you lose," Ryan told Hugh.
Ryan shares four kids with wife Blake Lively. He is dad to daughters Betty, James, and Inez, and a fourth baby whose name and sex remain unknown. Hugh Jackman is a father of two. He shares Oscar and Ava with ex-wife Deborra-lee Furness.
"You don't get what you want all the time,” Ryan continued. “Something you worked on really hard didn't work. You feel like you said something embarrassing today, you did something that didn't sit right with you.”

Parents are not perfect but sometimes feel pressured to appear that way to their kids. Ryan believes this does not serve children. “It's just so important that [your kids] see that and they don't just hear, 'Oh Dad nailed it.' Because you lose so much more than you win,” he concluded.
