It's been a year since Shakira and Gerard Piqué separated amid rumors of him cheating. In her cover story with People en Español, which was published Monday, she opens up about the betrayal and how Gerard's infidelity affected her.
Rumor has it that the 46-year-old singer discovered her partner had been cheating when she noticed some jam was missing from the fridge. This was an eyebrow raiser because nobody in the household liked jam other than Shakira.
However, she explained in her interview that she found out through the press that Gerard had cheated. At this time, she was with her dad, who was in the ICU.

Her father, who is 91, had fallen during the first communion of her son, Milan. “Everything happened at once,” she said. “My home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.”
The singer admitted that she didn't think she was going to survive after finding out about Gerard's affair. She had dreamed of having a two-parent household for her kids to grow up in.
During her father's recovery, she praised him and her mother for their long-lasting marriage. “They have both been a reflection of that dream that didn’t come true for me," she said of her parents. "But I hope they are role models for my kids.”
Since the breakup, Gerard has pretty much been unapologetic for his actions. He even stated that he was very happy in an interview with Spanish newspaper El País. "I keep doing what I want. The day I die, I will look back and hope I have always done what I wanted. I want to be faithful to myself. I'm not going to spend money cleaning up my image."
As for Shakira, she has been open about how his betrayal has impacted her. She has used her music as a platform to address the hurt.
While Gerard is in a relationship with the 24-year-old woman that he cheated with, rumor is going around that Shakira and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton may be in the "talking" stage. The singer has yet to address any rumors that she's started dating again.
