Officer Feliciano Sarah sighed as he received another call about Vanessa Walker. Vanessa was a troubled 13-year-old who had been threatening to run away from home for weeks. Concerned for Vanessa’s safety, Officer Sarah promptly arrived at the Walker residence to assess the situation.
Carmen and her daughter Vanessa always seemed to be in some kind of trouble. Carmen had called Officer Sarah countless times to try to get help with her daughter. At first, Officer Sarah felt sorry for Carmen, but he would soon come to learn that her behavior was a contributing factor in Vanessa continually wanting to flee her home life.
Vanessa was only 13 and almost every single weekend, her mother would invite strange people over to their house for parties. This always made Vanessa feel uncomfortable and unsafe because she never knew how the evening would play out. So, she would often take it upon herself to leave and stay at a friend’s house until things quieted down.
As it turned out, when Carmen made those calls to Officer Sarah claiming that her daughter ran away from home, she always knew where she was. She just harbored resentment toward her daughter for choosing to spend the night somewhere else.
When Vanessa returned home after the last party, she learned that her mother had bolted her bedroom door shut with three locks. Carmen informed her that this was punishment for running away so many times.
