They say no good deed goes unpunished. TikToker Amelia Goldsmith would likely agree. She attempted to pay for three different people’s groceries and was rejected by them all. This did not leave her feeling warm and fuzzy like she had hoped.
Amelia is located in London, England. She attempted her kind gesture at a Sainsbury's store on a Wednesday. She wanted to “cheer someone up during the mid-week slump.” Instead she was left in tears.
Amelia posted her failed attempts at kindness on TikTok. Her video has gotten around 800,000 views on the popular social media app.
“I just hope they don’t look at me thinking I’m some weirdo,” she begins. This became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Amelia's first attempt was to a man who was placing his items on the checkout conveyor. She described him as “angry.” He wanted to know why Amelia was doing this. Amelia next approached a woman who also turned her down. She said she was starting to feel “embarrassed and judged” after being rejected twice. The third time was not a charm, either. Another woman said no because “there are a lot more deserving people in the world” who could use the help.

Amelia was determined to do some good that day, so she bought some pasta and sauce and donated it to the store’s food bank. Someone told her “God bless you” as she placed the items in the donation bin. At least she had that.
This adventure did not turn out the way Amelia had hoped. “I was expecting the first person to be like, overjoyed and grateful and happy for me to pay for their shopping, but obviously that didn’t go down well,” she explained.
Many in the comments pointed out she might have gotten rejected because she was filming the encounters. “I feel that sharing your good deeds online is more about serving your ego than others. Good on you for donating to the food bank,” one user wrote. It is a valid point.
