The new year is a clean slate, a chance for people to try again to be the best versions of themselves. Unfortunately, these New Year's resolutions can become predatory tools for the diet and wellness industry.
One TikTok user was quick to remind people of this fact and call it out. The account called The Salad Whisperer posted a now-viral video that keeps 2023 real. The account is run by a woman named Sarah who describes herself as a “classically trained chef. ED recovered. Foe of diet culture and toxic wellness.”
Sarah’s video opens up with an all-too-familiar commercial of stereotypical skinny white women doing yoga, drinking smoothies, and eating greens, saying, “To whoever needs to hear this: 2023 is going to look exactly like 2022.” Thankfully, Sarah interrupts this nonsense to bring viewers back to reality.
“This is the time of year when conventionally attractive and privileged people are going to try to convince you that the only difference between them and you is the fact that they make great food choices and you don’t. And that’s total [expletive],” she says.
This video resonated with many viewers. One user wrote, “Yeah no matter how many smoothies I make I’m still not born rich and with predetermined genetics of being tall and thin.”
“SAY IT LOUDER I’m already getting so many weight loss vids pushed on my FYP and I’m LIVID,” chimed in another.
A good tip for avoiding unwanted wellness ads is turning them off in your settings on Instagram and TikTok.
