Runner Beats 14K Other Women In London Marathon, But People Are Upset Because She’s Trans

When it comes to sports and equality, there is still a lot of room for growth and acceptance, especially in terms of the LGBTQ+ community.

This news story from the New York Post shares how a transgender runner is under scrutiny after participating in the London Marathon and vehemently celebrating “girl power” while finishing the race.

Video footage from the marathon showcases a happy Glenique Frank, who beat out nearly 14,000 others in the female category. According to PinkNews, Frank came in 6,160th place and has been accused of “cheating real women out of a place” in the marathon.

PinkNews reports that even though she is facing backlash, Frank ran in the female category of the popular running event in order to help call for “equality in sport,” and she even has hopes for a transgender category someday.

In the video clip, Frank, sporting bright rainbow arm warmers, tells a reporter that after participating in several marathons around the world, including New York City, Tokyo, and Chicago, she thinks London is “the best.” She even takes a moment to do a shout-out to her son, who is expecting a baby, and exclaims how she cannot wait to be a “Granny G.”

PinkNews reports that the transgender runner has been unfairly misgendered by several news outlets, and Frank notes that she didn’t feel as though she identified with any gender marker available on the London Marathon application form.

Frank also revealed that she feels “bad” when she runs, as she doesn’t put her “hair” or a wig on, which can then cause gender dysphoria as she just sees an “ugly boy” looking back at her.
