President Donald Trump is nearly a year and a half into his second term, and yet, he just can’t stop talking about his predecessors. You’ve probably noticed that many of his speeches and Truth Social rants mention Former President Joe Biden and/or Former President Barack Obama. Trump has complained about Biden’s speeches, his signatures, the way he walked down the stairs, among other things, even though no one asked.
And more recently, he made a wild claim about “respect” that has raised eyebrows on social media.
During a recent speech, Trump tried to say that his predecessors weren’t respected.

In trying to talk himself up, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he “inherited a mess” because of Biden. He has also said that the United States was “a laughingstock” under Biden’s leadership, before he somehow transformed it into the “hottest country.”
In April, he made the mistake of talking about how the U.S. was an embarrassment “a year ago,” seemingly not realizing that he was the president at the time. Awkward.
Similarly, at a recent event, Trump tried to say that the U.S. was not “respected” in the same way when his predecessors were in power. Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s policy conference, he claimed that first responders didn’t respect the country’s leadership, which was a problem.

The fact that he continues to blame Biden for things is troubling, but people were also bothered by the speech because they took it to mean that Trump was either claiming that he is more respected than his predecessors or demanding respect simply because he’s president. Either way, critics obviously weren’t in support of this message.
In his speech, Trump said, “We couldn’t get police men and women, we couldn’t get fire men and women. Anything with a uniform because they were ashamed of our country ’cause we had people that were not respected.”
He then added the part that really rubbed people the wrong way: “You have to respect the president. If you don’t respect the president, you’re gonna have a problem.”
Many critics took to the comments to assert that respect is earned, and they don’t respect the current president.

Perhaps he was saying that having a president who is generally respected is important, or perhaps he was telling everyone that they must respect the president. A lot of commenters assumed it was the latter. “Why do I ‘have’ to respect the president?” one critic questioned in response. “Respect is earned. I haven’t seen anything this president has done that earned respect.”
Another critic argued that respect “isn’t given to a man who has no problem belittling others for no reason.”
Someone else tried to fix his statement for him, writing, “If The President doesn’t respect the American People. Then you’re going to have a problem.”
But a few critics technically did agree with Trump on some level. “We have a big problem, alright,” a commenter wrote.
If Trump was truly begging for respect, people found that pretty pathetic. It’s almost reminiscent of Vice President JD Vance asking everyone to thank him.
