A United Airlines flight that was on course from Newark, New Jersey, to Rome was met with a series of unfortunate events on September 20, 2023. The plane, carrying 270 passengers and 14 crew members, plunged more than 28,000 feet in 10 minutes. The flight was forced to reverse its course and had to head back to Newark airport to land.
Because Flight 510 turned back, it never made it to its destination in Italy. It appears there was an issue with the Boeing 777's cabin pressurization, the airline announced in a statement.
According to FlightAware, the plane took off from Newark Liberty International Airport at 8:37 p.m. and landed back at the airport at 12:27 a.m. It was headed to Rome–Fiumicino International Airport.
“The flight landed safely and there was never any loss of cabin pressure,” a United Airlines spokesperson said. The plane returned “to address a possible loss of cabin pressure,” the statement read.

The Federal Aviation Administration also said the plane experienced a “pressurization issue,” which made it have to reverse course. Passengers on the plane made it to their destination after boarding a different aircraft.
