Usha Vance has spoken about her attempts to maintain a life that feels at least somewhat normal to her, even though her husband, JD Vance, is the vice president. But it seems like that has become increasingly difficult for her after welcoming their fourth child. Usha and JD announced the birth of their son Alec on July 19, 2026, meaning that Alec is about two months old — but he already has his own Secret Service detail.
Usha has said she finds this a bit absurd.
Given that Alec is only two months old, he’s always with his mother. Usha already has her own security detail, but during a recent Daily Wire interview, she revealed that her two-month-old baby also has his own. Understandably, that has made caring for her newborn baby look quite a bit different this time around.
“He has a Secret Service detail,” the Second Lady said. “None of our newborns had that before.”
She added, “It’s sort of an absurdity because he’s always attached to me. He’s never anywhere far from me.”
It sounds like Usha is still trying her best to make her life feel normal.
Earlier this year, when she sat down for an interview with NBC News, Usha talked about shopping at Costco and maintaining a sense of normalcy in her life. At the time, she felt that was still possible for her, on some level.
“One of the other advantages of my position is that, in reality, people don’t recognize me all that much,” she said at the time. “And if I wear my jeans and a T-shirt and pull my hair up and go to the grocery store or go to the library, maybe someone will notice. But for the most part, I can just do those kinds of things.”
One of those things includes shopping with her kids. “We have our neighborhood shops,” she said. “We have our Costco membership… They pick their lunchbox items from there. It’s just sort of a family tradition.”
During her Daily Wire interview, Usha also talked about being able to visit libraries and cafes, perhaps because people aren’t expecting to see her there.
But people have noticed her at times.
And she also touched on the experience of caring for a newborn in the public eye, which is new for her.
“It’s different to wonder whether people are watching you when you’re struggling with some of the things that any parent of any newborn struggles with,” she said. While it sounds like she’s worried about this a bit, she also added that “people have been really wonderful about it.”
Even when they’ve spotted her out in public. “Either (people) don’t notice me because I think it’s sort of an unexpected thing to be in their bagel shop or coffee shop or library or whatever — they’re not looking for me in that kind of environment,” she explained. “And when they have noticed, it’s only been to be congratulatory, say something sweet about the baby, that sort of thing.”
