Vice President JD Vance has been doing a lot of interviews lately as he promotes his new book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith. At times, he’s also been joined by his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance. People have long had questions about their relationship, to the point that some individuals frequently speculate that they might be headed toward divorce. Their recent interactions and comments about their relationship have not cleared things up, though. They’ve actually left people with more questions than answers.
One moment that’s getting a lot of attention is a brief discussion about their differing religious beliefs. Usha was raised Hindu and remains a practicing Hindu. Meanwhile, JD converted to Catholicism in 2019.
During a recent interview, Usha was asked about converting.

Her response has gone viral on social media because people saw it as pretty embarrassing for JD. The viral moment is from the couple’s June 14 CBS interview. CBS reporter Robert Costa asked Usha about whether her husband’s decision to convert influenced her in any way.
She explained why she never really felt the same need that he did — and some people online think her response was pretty brutal. “I grew up in a Hindu household that was a very stable household,” Usha explained. “I have not felt the same need to seek something different that he has.”
A lot of people perceived this as a subtle dig.

This exact quote started circulating on social media when journalist Shashank Mattoo shared the clip. To people on social media, Usha was basically saying she never had to consider converting to another religion because she grew up in a stable, happy family — unlike her husband. Which, ouch.
“Saying ‘I grew up in a very stable household’ while sitting next to her husband, JD Vance, is diabolical,” one person wrote on X. Someone else said, “I was not expecting this from her. basically she is saying I am not a loser to convert to another religion. lol.”
And another person wrote, “Favorite clip on the internet currently is Usha Vance showing a spine and dissing her hilbilly husband and his dysfunctional family.”
To be fair, Usha might not have realized how her comment would land. It’s possible that she didn’t mean anything bad by it. But some people think it’s possible that she did realize this, and still said it anyway. “Either Usha didn’t know how this would sound. Or she was really fed up, and knew exactly how it would sound,” someone commented.
Perhaps JD didn’t even realize how “brutal” it sounded. “This is such a brutal answer that MAGA fans won’t even understand that they have been brutalized,” one commenter said. “Maybe even Vance didn’t”
During the same interview, Usha touched on her husband’s mental health journey.
She said that he turned to faith because therapy “didn’t work” for him. “It’s not that therapy doesn’t work for other people, but JD just didn’t have the right kind of trust in that process,” Usha said. “He just didn’t feel at home in it, really exploring some of the feelings that he had and trying to figure out how he wanted to be the person that he wanted to be for the rest of his life.”
She previously told him, “Therapy didn’t work for you; church does.”
