Regardless of how you feel about Kim Kardashian, she certainly knows how to get people’s attention. On multiple occasions, some ad campaigns and product launches for her SKIMS brand have gone viral just because they were so unexpected (we’re looking at you, “Ultimate Bush” panties). And she continues to find new ways to surprise people, like by collaborating with Will Ferrell, of all people.
Thanks to Kim’s brand, the 58-year-old actor is now an underwear model. Will is the star of a new SKIMS campaign, and people have mixed feelings about it.
On one hand, people appreciate the concept and the representation.
Because how often do you see 58-year-old men modeling for a company like SKIMS? The unconventional ad campaign also helps promote Will’s new Netflix show, The Hawk. In the ad campaign, he actually portrays his character from the show, Lonnie Hawkins.
Kim and Will (as Lonnie) both shared photos from the shoot on Instagram. In the photos, Will is wearing a tank top, socks, and SKIMS briefs. In some of the images, he’s also holding a golf club.
And people seemed to love it, based on all the positive comments on social media. When the official SKIMS account shared the photos, some fans said it might be the best SKIMS campaign yet. “Will Ferrell for SKIMS is something I didn’t know I needed,” one person commented.
The SKIMS account wrote in a social post that Lonnie (aka Will) “knows he’s still got it.”
And people didn’t disagree. Of course, there were some critics who said they didn’t like the photoshoot, but for the most part, people loved seeing something different and unexpected.
In one discussion on Reddit, fans praised both Kim and Will for the surprising collab. “I love this ad so much,” one person wrote. “Go on Kim get the middle age daddies too wearing skims.”
Praising Will, someone else wrote, “How fun. Good for him. Getting more body representation.” And another person added, “Honestly I want more regular looking people in lingerie ads so I am f—ing here for this.”
But, on the other hand, some people didn’t love the fact that Will chose to collaborate with Kim.
While the majority of people seemed to love that Will was the face of the campaign, some fans of his were disappointed to see that he chose to collaborate with SKIMS. In a separate Reddit discussion, people started to question whether he’s desperate for money or has no standards because they couldn’t understand why he’d appear in a SKIMS ad.
“Is Will at the point in his career where he’ll do anything for money?” one person questioned. It sounds like people wished he had done something like this elsewhere.
“I hate that he did this for SKIMS,” someone else wrote. In response, another Redditor added, “Right? Like, the idea is cool and the pictures are fire. But to know it’s for skims is a bit disappointing.”
“I don’t like that he’s doing an ad for this brand specifically, but I do like to see men being encouraged to take pride in their appearance the way women are expected to and he’s setting an example for other dudes,” a fourth commenter noted.
