It was a balmy summer in a small town in Alabama. It had been so hot that the local police force and emergency services saw a noticeable downturn in the number of calls they had been receiving throughout the past few weeks. It appeared so uncomfortable outside that people could not even fathom committing a crime.
For the few police officers who were out on patrol, it was almost eerie. There was practically no one out on the streets as most people were staying inside their homes with either their air conditioners or fans blasting.
One August evening, it was a quiet night in the emergency dispatch center when the phone began to ring. When the worker named Elisa picked up the phone, she was met with a young and innocent voice on the other end. She was surprised to hear a little boy ask if someone could please bring him a Happy Meal from McDonald’s.
Elisa took a deep breath and decided to engage the child to retrieve some more information from him. She asked the little boy if his parents were around as she was certain he had called the wrong number. He told her that they were both asleep and he just wanted someone to bring him food because he was so hungry.
Elisa decided to track the phone call’s location and send out two patrol officers to make sure that the boy was OK.
