Alex McKelvey is a good samaritan like you’ve never seen before. Whether it’s volunteering at a shelter, rewarding a stranger with a high five, or cleaning up trash to better her community, Alex is persistent in her quest to give back. The most extraordinary part? She’s only 8-years-old (for which age there seems to be an excess of incredible children, like Ukrainian acrobat Emily Moskalenko).
But why is such a small little girl taking on so much work? Alex, along with her parents, are honoring the memory of her late Nana Linda, who passed away shortly before they took on a long list of community outreach. Alex’s grandmother was a woman who herself would give the very coat off her back to a stranger in need, says Alex’s mother Sarah, and that’s a legacy that Alex felt she wanted to continue.
Equipped with a list of 600 acts of kindness to meet by her Nana’s 60th birthday, a crew from USA Today followed Alex and Sarah as they completed the last few on their checklist. The very last one took shape in the form of a youth center that Alex spent hours painting herself. She doesn’t plan to stop there though, there’s far more good to be done.
