A few years ago, 9-year-old Hailey Fort spotted a homeless man and thought it would be nice to buy him a sandwich. The simple random act of kindness didn't stop there, though.
After befriending the man named Edward, Hailey and her mother learned the man had recently lost his job at the supermarket and had no where to go. Unable to fathom the man spending the night out in the freezing rain, the little girl devised a plan.
With the help of her parents, Hailey set out to build a mobile sleeping shelter for Edward. The shelter is an 8×4-foot wooden structure, complete with windows, a front door, and insulation.
"It just doesn't seem right that there are homeless people," Hailey said. "I think everyone should have a place to live."
Hailey received a $3,000 grant from Together Rising for her efforts. She plans to use the money to build 11 more of shelters.
"If she had her way we'd have mobile sleeping shelters taking up our front lawn," said Hailey's mother, Miranda.
In addition to building the homes, Hailey planted a garden that she harvests for the local food bank and donated 128 pounds last year. She has also provided health and hygiene supplies to the homeless.
