It's never easy for any immigrant to start a life in a new country. Even if there is a plan in place, or a job set up, there are endless hurdles to overcome.
Language, culture, and discrimination are just naming a very small handful of the issues refugees face.
When a woman named Almaz Gebremedhin came to America from Sudan in 1993, she was very hopeful. She came over with her five children, a nephew, and her husband from an arranged marriage.
As soon as they made it onto American soil, though? That husband left Gebremedhin as quickly as he married her. That left this very tough woman in a very, very difficult position. She had six children to care for, as well as herself.
She took three cleaning jobs to help support her large family. She worked so, so hard, but you'd never know it from her glowing smile and positive attitude.
The values she taught her children are the values that not many children get a full dose of these days. There's a reason that all five of them are going on to bigger and better things that Gebremedhin had access to.
If there's any proof of a good woman, it's how her children turn out. It's not only her children that admire this wonderful woman, though.
