When Yara Garcia was only 23 weeks along with twins, she began to feel contractions every 3 minutes. She and her husband rushed to the hospital where, sadly, one of their daughters didn't make it out of the delivery room.
The other little girl, whom they named Amaziah, spent the next 98 days at Loyola Medicine's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where her doctors and nurses fought every complication that came her way. Finally, the day arrived for the grateful mama to take her sweet pea home and truly start their life as a family.
Yara was nervous, but Amaziah seemed to blossom while out of the hospital and they were even able to remove her oxygen tube. Unfortunately, this only lasted a week before the parents heard coughing coming from their baby's crib at night. The cough continued to get worse over the next week, so they brought her right back to the hospital where Yara was told that, after everything she already battled, Amaziah was now suffering from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Though RSV can seem like nothing more than an annoying cold for healthy adults and older children, the virus can be deadly for any younger or much older individuals.
Doctors were afraid this poor family would lose another child, telling Yara and her husband to prepare for the worst. The dedicated staff remained vigilant in providing their daughter with the best care possible while friends and family prayed for her strength.
Take a look to hear the whole emotional story from Yara and see how Amaziah pulled through to be the happy girl she is today.
