It was heartbreaking. An Ohio seventh grader was humiliated and embarrassed when she went to a school dance in a yellow dress. Ari Waters, a 12-year-old at Mt. Orab Middle School felt beautiful in her simple yellow dress.
There is nothing remotely inappropriate about the dress. You'd expect to see one like it during an Easter celebration or even at your local church on a hot summer day. However, when Ari attended her school dance, a male teacher told her to put on her coat.
When Ari's mother, Gina, asked for an explanation from the vice principal, what he said left both Gina and Ari disturbed.
“I said 'what’s wrong with her bare arms?' And she said, ‘They are sexual objects,’” Gina told WKRC.
Ari said she felt dirty and bad about her body because of the comment. It seems awfully strange that an adult would say something about a 12-year-old girl's bare shoulders. However, when Gina asked for an apology, the school refused.
“That word should never have been used, and it should never have been associated with an arm, with a limb," Gina said.
While there is nothing wrong with a school enforcing a dress code, there should be clear reasons why. The administration may feel that Ari's outfit was inappropriate, but many feel that the school's handling of the situation was far more improper.
