Blowing out the candle — it’s one of the most satisfying aspects of a birthday. It not only acts as the seal for the birthday wish, but it is also the icing on the cake for another year older… well, kind of. This little guy is about to step foot into the terrible twos, but it seems he's already being tripped up before he even blows out his candle.
A giant white wax birthday candle cushioned by a swirl of crisp white frosting balances perfectly atop a chocolate cupcake. The little boy gestures toward the wick sticking out of the candle and utters the nonsensical words that only the infant's family can understand.
"Light it on top?" his dad asks, confirming his son's request. With a click, the tip of the lighter transforms into a blue and white flame, dancing with the wick until they merge together.
The toddler studies the growing flame before taking a deep breath and leaning in. But before he can let the air out, his dad throws his hand out as a barrier.
"Hold on! Hold on! We've got to sing to you first!"
The little boy pulls his shirt over his mouth before revealing a grin, while his parents sing the ritualistic birthday song. The newly turned 2-year-old waits patiently until the end of the song — and that's when his mom gives him the go-ahead.
He gives the candle an I-mean-business glare, then purses his lips together and blows — ugh, so close! Well, not really. The flame ripples gently as his dad gently encourages him to blow again, gesturing at the top of the candle. He lifts himself up toward the candle, nose nearly touching the flickering light, and lets out a forceful, yet equally ineffective, blow. He gives it a few more tries, his dad coaching him on his technique, before something finally clicks.
Sadly, what clicks is not the child's ability to blow out a candle. But his dad does think of a brilliant idea! He gets up from the table and comes back with a plastic straw. Placing the straw between his son's lips, he lines the other end up to the flame and utters the command. Instantly, the flame vanishes!
