Back in September, zookeeper Tim Brys brought his four-year-old son, Wiley, to the site of a future shopping center to look for fossils. The Dallas Zoo worker thought it would be a great way to experience the outdoors, but the day took an unexpected turn when Wiley made a remarkable discovery.
While digging in the dirt, Wiley reportedly found rare, 100-million-year-old dinosaur bones! While most young boys are obsessed with dinosaurs and love playing in the dirt, how many can actually say they discovered one? (And how many men can say they discovered mammoth bones?!)
"We commonly go collect fossils as something we can do together to be outside. Wiley enjoys coming with me on my trips," Brys explained to NBC News. "Wiley walked a little ways ahead of me and came back with a piece of bone. And I paused and was like, 'OK, where did you find this?' "
Brys knew they'd found something interesting.
Scientists at Southern Methodist University started excavating the rare dinosaur bones. The fossils were placed in burlap and plaster to create a protective shell around the bones. Once transported to SMU, the fossils will be analyzed and studied by expert paleontologists.
The experts speculate the bones belong to a group of dinosaurs called "nodosaurs" — herbivorous creatures that lived in the late Jurassic to early Cretaceous periods.
