Cop Answers Welfare Check On Abused Little Girl & Decides He Has To Do Something About It

Police officer Brian Zach will never forget the day he met little Kaila. The Arizona officer, who responded to a welfare check following a call that a 2-year-old girl might be the victim of abuse, ended up adopting the child after her parents were taken into custody. This chance encounter changed both of their lives forever.

On the day of the call, Brian arrived to find young Kaila in a distressing state at the home in Kingman, Arizona. "One of her eyes was swollen, she had dried blood in both her ears, she had different coloring of bruises all about her face, but she was still a happy-go-lucky 2-year-old," Brian recounted. The situation was grim, but amid the chaos, a remarkable bond began to form between the officer and the little girl.

As they waited for Child Services to arrive, Brian and Kaila watched the Disney movie Wreck-It Ralph. During the film, Kaila grabbed Brian's hand, placing it in her lap and gently petting it as if to console him. "It melted my heart right away," Brian said, reflecting on the tender moment that solidified their connection.

The morning after the incident, Brian woke up thinking about Kaila. Concerned for her well-being, he immediately contacted the Department of Child Safety worker to check on her. During the call, Brian was asked a life-changing question: Would he consider being a placement for Kaila?

Meeting each other on a Saturday night, Kaila was dropped off at Brian's home by Wednesday. Over the next two years, Kaila became an integral part of Brian's family. The journey culminated in a joyous milestone: Brian Zach officially adopted Kaila, giving her the loving home and stability she desperately needed.
