It seems like only yesterday Courteney Cox announced the birth of her first and only child, Coco Arquette. But, surprise! It happened 16 years ago. Coco is nearing adulthood, and aside from having famous parents, she's already got a lot going for her. For one, her singing voice is downright incredible.
She proved that in a Mother's Day video, where she sang the song "Cardigan" by Taylor Swift. This wasn't the first time she's shared her voice online, but it's truly one of the best performances we've heard from her.
It's apparent that Coco might be ready for something bigger. Based on what Courteney writes in the captions of her videos, you can tell she's one proud mom.
"Happy Mother’s Day to all those out there who are mothers, have been mothers, will be mothers, or love like mothers," Courteney captioned the video. Courteney takes over on piano, while her friend, musician Joel Taylor, adds the guitar, making the cover even more celebratory. Coco's voice sounds like she's ready for the studio.
Back when Coco was 15, Courteney had to bribe her to get her to sing on camera. But it worked — and Coco sang a gorgeous Demi Lovato cover. "When you have a teenager you barely get to see them," she joked in the caption. "So much negotiating. Coco traded me one song if I let her go to a party. I took it."
It's also nice to know that Courteney is growing her musical talent as well. Not only is she able to back up Coco on piano, but she's posted plenty of videos of herself playing alongside other musician friends, including Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. Knowing that she's still making an effort to learn new skills is inspiring. Plus, she's not half bad.
Coco has been selective with what she shares online, which is a smart move — especially since she's just 16. While she has yet to share her own videos showcasing her talent, it wouldn't be surprising if she starts based on the outpouring of positive reactions she's getting. Perhaps American Idol is in her future.
Coco's been in the spotlight since she was born, likely because it was during the height of Friends popularity. She also made headlines after her mom and father, David Arquette, split up. While their relationship seems healthy now, David admitted that he wished the divorce had gone more smoothly.
Just this year, David did a Q&A with The Guardian. He was asked the question, "To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?" and his response was all about his daughter. "My daughter, Coco, because divorce is so difficult," he said.
David and Courteney were married from 1999 until they separated in 2010, finalizing their divorce in 2013. David remarried in 2015. He's been with Christina McLarty, and the couple has two sons together, meaning that technically, Coco's not an only child. David wasn't afraid to open up about his past with Courteney and had nothing but positive things to say.
"We're co-parents to our daughter who's 16 so we have a really great relationship," he told Yahoo! "We're friends, and we've communicated a lot because of Coco." But that doesn't mean that the separation has been completely smooth. As Coco has gotten older, there've been a lot of changes.
"Our daughter's really great," he said. "There's difficult parts, especially through the teenage years. There's a lot of emotions and feelings. We've just had – not an easy time with it, we've just been really open and supportive of each other. We never went head-to-head, [or] battled each other, through the process of divorce and through the process of raising our kid."
But surely he's also seen the videos of Coco's vocal talent and been impressed. It's hard not to be moved by her performances. And no matter what, it seems like Courteney is doing everything she can to keep a great relationship with her daughter. She's even included Coco in her new series, 9 Months With Courteney Cox. The focus of the show is pregnancy, something that Courteney admittedly struggled with.
After many miscarriages, Courteney and David chose IVF to get and stay pregnant with Coco. Having her open up about her journey is helpful for other moms who may choose this avenue. The show itself focuses on other couples and the long struggle it takes to get positive news as they hope to start their own families.
Between the singing and the participation on her mom's web series, it seems like Coco is ready to embrace the spotlight. It'll be interesting seeing where her career leads. With the talent she has and the people she already knows, it won't be shocking if she, herself, explores the world of acting. No matter what path she takes, she's bound to be successful.
