When I was a little kid in elementary school, I spent the whole year looking forward to “spirit week.”
Different schools call it by different names, but it’s generally an annual excuse for kids to goof off and dress up, usually scheduled right before a school vacation, and made up of different events, like “Roaring '20s Day” and “Pajama Day.”
But of course, no matter how your own school district celebrates it, every kid across the country knows the best day of them all to look forward to: “Crazy Hair Day.”
Whether it’s a little girl like Grace, whose mom braids a mean updo , or a pint-size surfer boy waiting for the day he finally gets to turn his hair into a perfectly gelled wave, kids of all ages look forward to showcasing their creative skills.
From over-the-top styles inspired by delicious baked goods to hairy situations that resemble alien life-forms, here are a few of our all-time favorite Crazy Hair Day looks!

One little girl set the bar high right away, with an elegant braid that looks just like a rainbow, complete with colorful waves of pipe cleaners woven in, and fluffy white scrunchies for clouds.
Of course, she was far from the only one going for color! One enterprising kid managed to combine a mohawk, a trio of buns, crazy color, and cupcake sleeves, all in one 'do.
Meanwhile, another little girl took the "sweet treats" theme to the extreme with this impressive homage to donuts and coffee from the beloved chain Dunkin' Donuts.
But not all styles were inspired by food. One boy took pipe cleaners in a different direction by adding googly eyes and turning them into a mysterious alien creature!
And another paid tribute to his favorite sport with a simple red and white look modeled after a standard-issue baseball. You could say he really knocked this one out of the park!
One creative thinker gave a brand-new meaning to "flowing" locks with a tricky updo that looks just like root beer flowing out of the bottle and into a party cup. We still can't figure out how she did this!
Another little girl gave a shout-out to her very favorite Disney princess by weaving a doll into a bright green braid. Put it all together, and this look is a perfect doppelgänger for Princess Ariel herself!
And, continuing the aquatic theme, the aforementioned surfer boy has his hair gelled into a wave, dyed blue, and adorned with a tiny Lego surfer!
If you know a little one who would be obsessed with these wacky styles, make sure to SHARE with anyone who needs inspiration for the next "Crazy Hair Day" on the books!
