The 12 Craziest Things Parents Have Given Their Kids

When we have kids, it's only natural to want to give them the moon and the stars. We want to fill their lives with everything that we didn't have growing up, and if our childhoods were lacking in material gifts, it's no wonder we want our kids to grow up having more extravagant birthdays and Christmases if we can afford it. But just as a childhood with very little can affect us, so can a childhood in which a kid gets way, way too much.

I'm all about surprising your kids and giving them gifts that they treasure. This little girl got a kitten for her birthday, and it's clear that even at 6 years old, she's already very polite and appreciative of everything she has. My own parents definitely did a great job of balancing out gift-giving with saying "no" or "you have to work for it first," and it left me with a real appreciation of what I do have rather than what I wish I could have. But other kids never get told "no" when it comes to having presents, and whether it's due to having rich parents, pushover parents, or both, it doesn't make for very responsible or gracious children.

The worst part about parents who give their kids everything is that most of the time, it's stuff that their kids don't even really want or need! Should a baby really have designer clothes? Is there any reason at all to spend $25,000 on a single Christmas gift for a child? Is it completely normal to give a debit card to a 12-year-old? For me, the answer to these questions is a resounding "NO," but for some parents, it's perfectly OK to do these ridiculous things for your children.

Don't forget to SHARE this post if you think that doing all this for your kids is completely crazy!

Six-year-old Lacie Pope's mom insists on spoiling her child on birthdays and holidays. The little girl frequently receives over $3,000's worth of gifts for special occasions, including a tutu covered in over $100 of crystals, but the kicker was when she received a kid-sized Audi that was also covered in crystals and worth over $2,300. The good news is that Lacie seems to have already figured out the important things in life without her mother's help — she's donating all of her birthday goodies to a charity to help kids with cancer after seeing a program on TV that made her realize that so many kids go without even the most basic necessities. Hopefully her kind deed will make her mom realize what most people already know: Kids do not need $2,000 toy cars to be happy.

2. Shopaholism

When I was 12 years old, I didn't even know what a designer label was. But Chase McKenna is no ordinary 12-year-old. She's a true shopaholic thanks to her parents' inability to say no to her whenever she wants something. She wears only designer label clothes and has an iPad and a smartphone, her own debit card, and a pony named Princess. Her parents, on the other hand, can't even afford to buy a house. They spend all their money catering to their three children and giving them anything and everything they ask for. Talk about some mixed-up priorities.

3. A jewel-encrusted bathtub

Ok, technically, it was celebrity baby Blue Ivy Carter's aunt who bought her the $5,200 tub that sparkles with pink Swarovski crystals, but that doesn't change the fact that Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby has been living the life of luxury before she could even walk. She also slept in a lucite crib worth $3,500 and has been napping in and throwing up on pricey designer clothes since she was born. I guess thousands of dollars is small money when you're worth millions, but am I the only one who thinks a baby is not even going to care about a crystal-encrusted bathtub?

4. Their own mansion

Valentina Paloma Pinault may be only eight years old, but when she's old enough to have her own house, she's not going to have to struggle to pay rent on a tiny apartment while surviving on Ramen. Valentina is the daughter of actor Salma Hayek and Kering owner François-Henri Pinault, and while it's expected that the daughter of the man who owns Gucci would grow up wearing some nice clothes, not many kids have an entire Los Angeles estate being held for them in a trust. Valentina's massive future home costs $12 million, and her dad pays $50,000 for it every month. I don't pretend to know the logistics of buying a home when the cost of the average house is pocket change to you, but I'm still having a hard time seeing why an eight-year-old needs such a massive estate years and years before she actually gets to live in it.

5. A playhouse that is more like a real house

Wouldn't it be great to live in a house with a sun porch, a loft room, intercoms, landscaping, and everything else you could want in a home? Don't worry — this kid's playhouse has you covered. Most kids are pretty content with a rickety treehouse or cheap plastic playhouse, but Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's daughter, Suri, received one of these "playhouses"  for Christmas one year. They're custom-made, so prices vary, but the one this little celebrity received reportedly cost around $24,000. It comes with running water, electricity, and is basically an actual tiny house that would make running away from home a lot more cozy. Heck, instead of paying every month for an apartment, I should just save up for one of these and live in my friend's backyard!

6. An ultra-demanding 1st birthday gift list

When you have a baby or bridal shower, it's totally normal to set up a registry so people know what you might need to help kickstart your new life. But when their baby turned a year old, two parents made the most intimidating gift list ever and sent it out to all the invited guests before the formal invitations even arrived. Worse, most of the demanded requested gifts were large and expensive, and they requested that any gifts that weren't on the list be given with a receipt so they could be returned to the store for the full price. Look, it's totally fine to talk with family and friends before your child's birthday and say, "Little Timmy already has about ten diamond-encrusted rattles, so we'd appreciate it if you avoided giving him any." But acting like someone is required to give your kid super expensive gifts just for the honor of being in his presence on his first birthday? Thanks, but I think I'll stay home and spend all that cash on my own kid instead.

7. Vacations they won't even remember

Scarlett and Savannah Jacobs have never known anything but a lifestyle of luxury. Neither of them are older than 3, but their mom and dad have already spent over $71,000 on giving these two little girls the best stuff money can by, including a nursery and bedroom that cost over $10,000. But perhaps the most ridiculous reason for them to spend money on their kids has been their expensive vacations, which have included trips to Cape Town, Greece (twice), Dubai (twice), and Spain. They always stay in five-star hotels, and each one must have a Michelin star restaurant inside. I'm not knocking on people who take their kids to see the world, but something tells me these two little girls would get a lot more out of a fun family trip to the nearest beach or to one of the Disney parks than they are from all these fancy trips that they're far too young to appreciate…or remember.

8. A credit card

Brogan Mackay was just eleven years old when this picture was taken, but you'd never guess that from how she dresses. This young girl has been dressed in designer attire since she came home from the hospital in Baby Dior clothes, and with her parents' inability to tell her "no," it's only gotten worse as she's grown up. She celebrated her 11th birthday in an expensive limo with her friends sipping on non-alcoholic champagne, and even though her mom buys her anything she wants (which is pretty much everything with a fancy label on it), Brogan still has her own credit card that has up to $400 on it at any given time. Her parents make less than $50,000 a year with their combined incomes, and Brogan's mom works extra hours at her hairdressing job to help pay for her young daughter's fancy tastes. But perhaps the most disturbing part of this story is that Brogan's only life aspiration is to be a glamour model… and she asked her mom for breast enhancement surgery when she was just eleven. If that's not a wake-up call, I don't know what it's going to take for these parents to realize that there is such a thing as "too much" when it comes to buying things for their daughter.

9. A "Welcome to the World" party

Twins Emme and Max were destined to have a pretty lavish childhood, being the twins of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, but it was godfather Tom Cruise that really blew everyone away with his gift to the young kids. The actor spent $200,000 on a christening (or "Welcome to the World") party that included diamond rattles and celebrity guests like Elton John, David Beckham, and Eva Longoria. I've never been to a christening party before, but I assume most of them don't involve spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a kids' party that they probably won't even remember…but then again, most of us don't make Tom Cruise's salary.

10. A $360k Maybach

Hearing about a teenager getting the old family station wagon on his 16th birthday is nothing new, but Justin Combs didn't get a hand-me-down for his sweet sixteen. His dad, who you might know as P. Diddy Combs, bought his son a Mercedes Maybach valued at around $360,000. It's a nice surprise, don't get me wrong, but if Justin is anything like I was as a beginning driver, Diddy might want to start him out with something that's a bit less expensive to back into a mailbox, like the old family Ferrari.

11. A million-dollar painting

Most babies get cute clothes or soft toys for their first birthday, but Harper Beckham received something extra special to celebrate her first year on Earth. The daughter of David and Victoria Beckham is now the proud owner of a Damien Hirst painting, which is named "Daddy's Girl" and reportedly cost around $1 million. It features a large pink heart with lots of butterflies and hands in the little girl's room, so one can only hope that Harper develops an appreciation for fine art before she loses her interest in hearts and butterflies.

12. Diamond nail clippers

When you're a prince, you can truly get just about anything you want. So when Prince George was born to Kate and William, it's no surprise that he was showered with lavish gifts. But nail care company StylFile created a nail clipper just for the first royal baby, made with 18-carat gold and 350 one-carat diamonds. I guess when you're a baby prince, even your manicures have to be fit for royalty.
