We'd like to think that when children step out to play in their neighborhoods, they're protected by visible traffic notifications to alert drivers to slow down. That's precisely what a Colorado father aimed to do after witnessing one too many vehicles racing through his neighborhood streets.
Kurt Smith, a father and something of a neighborhood watchman, was sick of seeing cars fly by as children played on scooters and skateboards in the street. So he decided to do something about it.
"I put up some legal stop signs, but illegally placed them," he tells Colorado's KUSA 9 News.
But KUSA reports it took less than 24 hours for a Sheriff's Deputy to remove the signs, but that Kurt continues to put up the signs. Neighborhood resident Joey Herrera tells KUSA that he sees cars driving through the neighborhood sometimes at speeds of up to 50 mph.
Until formal speed restrictions are enforced on those roads, he'll continue to put them up — whether or not they continue to be taken down. So we vote this guy as a contender for father and neighborhood watchman of the year, right up next to this hero dad whose tattoo for his daughter won our hearts.
