Not all of us get a choice as to whom we're staying at home with these days. Some of us are all alone, while others are with our parents for the first time in years. But most of us likely aren't with an ex from years past. That is, unless you're Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.
As far as ex couples go, Bruce and Demi are one of the most notable. The couple, who were both two of the top names in Hollywood, were married for 11 years. Together, they have three daughters — Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah. But they separated around 20 years ago.
The good news is that they still get along, which is important for the sake of their kids. They've even had no issues talking about their relationship and how they met. Supposedly, Demi Moore had an interesting first impression of Bruce. In her book Inside Out, she said, "My impression was, he's kind of a jerk … but Bruce was so gallant — in his own boisterous way, a real gentleman."
But the arrangement is still strange for most people. Especially because these days Bruce is married to Emma Heming.
Bruce and Emma have been married for over a decade. Even though she seems OK with Demi, who was present at their vow renewal last year, fans still wonder if it's a strange situation for her. "We said, we do, again, 10 years later," Emma said on Instagram.
Brides reports that when Bruce and Emma wed in 2009, Demi was also invited to the ceremony. At the time, Demi was with then-husband Ashton Kutcher, whom she was involved with for quite some time. Even then, there seemed to be no bad blood between the two households.
So who is Emma Heming? She's an actress and model who reportedly met Bruce at the gym. Together, they have two daughters — Mabel and Evelyn. Since they're both much younger than Bruce's three adult daughters, it makes the situation even more odd. Wouldn't Bruce be more of a help at his own home?
Emma and Bruce have a considerable age difference, but it didn't stop them from falling in love. Emma believes it was love at first sight, and she was more than happy to be part of his family. However, Emma has been very open about the fact that their marriage isn't perfect. There's a still a lot of work to be done.
"By no means are my husband and I the poster child for the 'perfect marriage' cause my lord do we have our issues," she said on Instagram back in 2018. "But what I’ve come to realize is that love is really a matter of being selfless and wanting nothing but the best for your partner. Their success is also yours. Their failures cut you deep, and you share that too."
That said, Emma has reportedly had no problem with her husband spending time with Demi and his older daughters. And she wants people to know that this doesn't mean there are cracks in their marriage. If that was the case, Bruce likely wouldn't have looked quite as joyous in his fun stay-at-home photos.
“Demi and Emma are close, and all three get on great as a big blended family. There are no issues at all. Emma needed to stay in L.A. with the young kids,” a family source told People magazine. Spending time together is reportedly normal for them, and no lines are crossed.
"Demi and Bruce have been best friends for years. They are very close," a source who knows Demi added. It could seem a little more scandalous because in the past, some of Demi's relationships had an "incident" happen prior to the truth being revealed. While Demi likely wants to forget about it, Ashton Kutcher was seen cheating on her with other women prior to the news of their split.
Demi sat down with Diane Sawyer to talk about how she found out. When the rumor circulated, she asked him directly if it was true — and he admitted it was. "And I think my response was, 'Are you [expletive] kidding me?' That was it. And I think I could barely take a breath," Demi said, per The Hollywood Reporter.
But one of the good things about Ashton? He really did care for Demi's daughters. It seems like he had a similar relationship with them as Emma does. In a situation like Demi and Bruce's, every relationship has understood that their family together is a priority. That may be why she's co-parented so successfully with Bruce throughout the years.
"[Ashton] loved my children — it wasn't something he feared," Demi added. "He seemed to be comfortable with the enormity of the ex-husband. I mean, you know, I felt like I was not coming with baggage, I had trunks." Ashton has since remarried, and he now has children of his own. Since Demi suffered from fertility struggles within that marriage, it was likely tough to hear the news.
After the news was revealed, Demi admits that she spiraled. She broke her sobriety and even had a night where she had a seizure, caused partly by synthetic pot and nitrous oxide. "Everyone else [at the party] was witnessing my body failing," she said. "My daughter [was] terrified that she was gonna see me die right in front of her. And within me, I was in a place that was thinking, 'Wow, how did I get in here? Isn't this interesting?'"
However, the actress has gotten into a healthier routine since. And with her past history what it is, it's even more probable that her stay-at-home time with Bruce isn't hurting Bruce's marriage to Emma. She knows how much it hurts when a partner is unfaithful. And for Bruce and Demi, they've managed to make it so far due to respect.
In a way, the friendship they've created is perfect. Anyone who's currently co-parenting can look at them and realize that life can move forward. Every situation may be different, but it sure seems like their three daughters have benefited from both parents continuing to have a love for each other, albeit a nonromantic type of love.
