Fans Ecstatic Over Never-Before-Seen Dr. Seuss Book ‘What Pet Should I Get?’

Beginning today, longtime fans will be able to get their hands on a never-before-seen manuscript by Theodor Seuss Geisel — known by adults and children the world over as the inimitable Dr. Seuss.

What Pet Should I Get? was a manuscript discovered in Geisel's estate consisting of black-and-white drawings accompanied by his Seuss-centric narrative. It's rumored to be an extension of one of his most famed titles, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, as many of the characters in his new buzzed-about title are nearly identical.

Geisel's longtime publisher Random House reassembled the manuscript and added color to the book, recreating a world many of us haven't visited since childhood. Its critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with the New York Times writing that the book "will remind us, delightfully, that Dr. Seuss, over half a century ago, made learning to read an adventure, a club children would actually want to belong to."

A synopsis of the book's plot, via its 3-star USA Today review:

“The story is simple. A brother and sister go to the pet store with permission from Mom and Dad (who are nowhere in sight) to ‘pick just one’ pet to bring home by noon. But it’s so hard to ‘Make Up Your Mind,’ as a banner proclaims! Brother wants a dog, sister wants a cat… or a rabbit, or a bird, or a fish.”

So what’s not to love? The newest book combines all the beloved facets of the Seussian world: imagination, creatures, and his signature prose.
