Barbra Streisand Just Made George Floyd’s 6-Year-Old Daughter Gianna Floyd A Disney Shareholder

In the wake of the death of George Floyd, a lot of people across the United States (and around the world) have come together to be educated, to support one another, and to help make life better for people they know and love. While many of his family and friends are feeling the loss of George, few will feel it quite as hard as his 6-year-old daughter, Gianna.

Many people have reached out to support Gianna during this time and throughout her future. Texas Southern University in Houston offered Gianna a full scholarship if she opts to attend the school, and Kanye West set up a 529 college savings plan that will fully cover Gianna's tuition wherever she decides to go.

Singer and actress Barbra Streisand has also stepped in to help support Gianna. In an Instagram post uploaded to Gianna's official account, the 6-year-old thanks Barbra for helping her become a Disney shareholder.

While it's not been made clear how many shares Barbra purchased for Gianna, the gift in and of itself is really generous. Though like many corporations, Disney has taken a financial hit due to the ongoing health crisis, it's reasonable to anticipate that the global business will make a comeback in the year to come.

Gianna's Instagram account shows her smiling with the certificate that details her Disney shares. The caption of the post reads, "Thank You @barbrastreisand for my package, I am now a Disney Stockholder thanks to you."

People magazine reported CNN calculations that Disney shares typically do well, saying, "an investment of $1,000 in Disney 10 years ago would be worth more than $4,600 as of February 2020 for a total return of around 370 percent."

The offer from Texas Southern University in Houston, where Gianna lives, is also generous. The board of regents of TSU issued a press statement that announced their decision.

Albert H. Myres, the chair of the board of regents, said, "This Board is committed to education and understands that a college degree is one of many powerful steps toward a productive and successful life."

He went on to add, "We know that this gesture cannot take the place of her dad's loving presence, but we hope that it will contribute to easing her journey through life."

And Gerald Smith, the chair of the TSU Foundation, added, "The TSU Foundation is proud to provide this privately-funded scholarship to Ms. Floyd. We know the value of an education in the pursuit of solutions and generational progress. We look forward to embracing her into the TSU family."

In early June, Kanye West also announced that he set up a 529 college savings plan for Gianna. These plans can be used to cover both K-12 expenses and college tuition expenses for the beneficiary. The plans are not strictly applicable to only undergraduate programs and can also be used to cover graduate school, medical school, and even law school.

Kanye also revealed that he donated a significant amount of money — $2 million — to funds that have been set up to support charities that benefit the families of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd. He also offered to cover the legal fees for both the Arbery family and the Taylor family.

Gianna's mother, Roxie Washington, has been careful about how her daughter is and isn't exposed to the media attention around her. Roxie and Gianna were interviewed by Good Morning America in early June, and Roxie said that Gianna's birth was everything to her dad. "She cried and he heard her. They wiped her off and they gave her to him. I mean that was his baby. He wanted that moment though. He really really wanted that moment. He looked forward to that."

Roxie also said that George went above and beyond to take care of his daughter. "He just wanted her to have the best. We were struggling so he did what he had to do as a man and he had to come here [to Minneapolis] to work. And he said 'I'm going to come back and get y'all.' I mean, that was his baby. He loved his little girl."

Roxie also said that George loved to play with Gianna. "He would put her on his shoulders. She didn't have to play with nobody else because daddy was gonna play all day long. And they played. They had fun."

Roxie also recently explained to NBC News that Gianna didn't attend her father's memorial service because she didn't want to if he wasn't there. "(Gianna) said, 'Well, is he going to be alive?' And I said, 'I told you your daddy is in heaven now,' and she said, 'If he's not alive, then I'm not going."
