After hearing scared little cries coming from the street, a group of children discovered a small kitten stuck in a storm drain near Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Tuesday afternoon.
Six-year-old Janeysha ran to tell her mother, who called the Lancaster Township firefighters, for help. They sent a crew of four men to assist in rescuing the cat.
"Hand tools were utilized to remove the drain cover, however, due to the confined space, no adults were going to be able to reach the kitten which was 2.5 feet down," the Lancaster Township firefighters wrote on their Facebook page.
The caller's daughter, Janeysha, with her mother's permission, volunteered to go in to save the kitten.
Under the watchful eye of the firefighters, they lowered Janeysha into the confined space. The girl's size proved to be just right. In minutes, she was able to lure the kitten into her arms and handed her out to safety.
The fire department reported the incident on its Facebook page, along with a picture of Janeysha, Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Usdin and the kitten.
The kitten, now named "Stormy," was taken to a shelter and is now available for adoption through the Lancaster County SPCA.
