Children are not only incredibly resilient, but they're also incredibly smart. Much smarter than we often give them credit for. We've seen, time and time again, that when faced with situations that they are far too young to understand (or should ever have to deal with), kids often make the right choices and step up to become heroes.
One such hero was crowned this past week in Kalamazoo, MI when a four-year-old girl named Calise Manning was forced to call 911 to save her pregnant mom's life.
The young girl's mother, Centerria Manning, is epileptic, and one day last week she began having a seizure. With her mother unable to reach the phone, four-year-old Calise wasted no time at all. She picked up the phone and dialed 911.
"She's shaking and she's having a baby," Calise told the 911 operator. "My mom is really pregnant and she's having a boy and she really needs help."
Calise provides the 911 operator with all the information she needs to ensure that an ambulance is dispatched to the family's Kalamazoo home. Meanwhile, the operator keeps young Calise calm by asking her how old she is.
"Four," Calise replies.
"You're four?" the operator asks.
"Yes," says Calise, "and I'm almost getting bigger."
Before hanging up, Calise turns to her mother and says, "Mommy, help is on the way, okay?"
So not only does young Ms. Manning save her pregnant mother's life, but she even has the wherewithal to actually try to ease Mom's anxiety by reassuring her that help is on the way. This little girl is amazing!
Within moments, help arrived at the scene to take Centerria to the hospital where she was treated. On Friday morning, two days after the heroic 911 call, Centerria gave birth to Calise's healthy baby brother TJ.
"He's cute," the little hero told ABC13. "I really love him."
And we're absolutely sure he's going to love you, too, Calise. Especially when he grows up and hears the story of how you saved both his and his mommy's lives by calling 911.
Way to go, Calise!
