Heart-Shaped Kids’ Seats Are Lovely And Eye-Catching

Sure, making fun DIY projects out of repurposed or recycled objects is so much fun.

But sometimes, creative crafters get the urge to construct something wonderful from nothing.

Imagination has inspired some truly amazing masterpieces in the form of sculptures, paintings, or cute little moon-shaped baby cribs.

This, combined with the right supplies, know-how, and a little elbow grease can bring the most magical thoughts to life.

This was the case for woodworker Dustin Van den Abeele, who wanted to make a collection of cool heart- and flower-shaped furniture for his kids.

He came up with the idea based off of a Valentine's Day festival called "jardin d'amour," then set to work making his vision a reality.

Watching his process of making beautiful bright hearts out of simple carpentry materials definitely makes me inspired to dig out my tools and get cracking on a big fantastical craft!

Dustin started out by cutting a heart pattern into Styrofoam with a little heart hole in the middle.

The little template was then traced onto two pieces of plywood and cut out to create the base of the chairs.

The plywood hearts were then separated 40 cm apart, and little wooden planks or "cedar rips" were nailed onto their perimeter.

Window spacers were used to space the planks so that they were even; the gaps also allow the chairs to dry more easily in the rain.

They were placed around the entirety of the chair to create the appearance of a three-dimensional shape.

The planks were also placed inside the heart hole to make the chair stronger and to give it a more consistent appearance.

The completed chairs were then painted bright white on their exterior and red on the interior.

A little flower table was also made using a similar method; a traced base with slats in between.

The finished products were whimsical, animated hearts that are sure to catch the eye of any little one.
