Many little boys have fantastic dreams of becoming firemen atop a big red truck, helping to save their communities while wearing a neat helmut. But few children are put in the difficult position of having to actually save a life. Still fewer would even know what to do.
But this week, 7-year-old Mason Farr astonished adults after saving the life of his drowning aunt — with officials adding that he "knew the right things to do," according to WLTX News. Jenny Mama had suffered a spinal chord injury on her way down a water slide that had left her temporarily paralyzed when she hit the water.
"The only thing I was thinking was how many gulps until [I] die," she recalls. "I took five."
Acting quickly, Mason dove into the water and lifted her head above water, allowing her to breathe and saving her life.
Lt. Darrick Elliott of the Ocean City Fire Department told WLTX that he was impressed by Mason's fast-thinking response. "He (was) aware of the situation around him and knew she was in distress and acted upon (it) and knew he had to do something."
Afterward, Mason was given a private tour of the fire department, evening getting to slide down the fireman's pole.
