Like so many Americans, Shanesha Taylor was a single mom just trying to make ends meet. Then, last March, she was arrested.
Taylor’s story resurfaced recently after she was sentenced to 18 years of probation for committing a crime that enters some moral gray areas. We’ve told you before about desperate moms willing to do anything for their children, even if it means stealing diapers to help keep them clean. But sometimes, its not so simple to empathize with a mom who takes drastic measures.
Unfortunately, that’s the case with Shanesha Taylor, because in her effort to make a better life for her kids, she also put their lives in danger.
She and her two boys, aged 2 years and 6 months at the time of her arrest, were living in her Dodge Durango in Scottsdale, AZ when she got an interview at a local insurance company. While the interview was great news, it left her in a bind, with two kids to care for.
So she went to the interview, but rather than leave her little boys with a friend or relative, she left them in the car with the windows cracked. When police and firefighters responded to calls for help, they waited for around 45 minutes for Taylor to return. Hot cars are dangerous even for adults, and are especially dangerous in a desert climate like Arizona.
Now, more than a year later, her kids have been returned to her custody, but she will be on probation for the next two decades of her life after pleading guilty to child abuse. Do you think her punishment fits the crime?
