It was 1960 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, when Andy Fierlit met Donna at a church dance. The lovestruck teen asked Donna for a stick of gum, and the rest was history.
In 1966, the pair went from high school sweethearts to husband and wife. They now have four children and 12 grandchildren.
At the age of 45, Donna suffered a brain aneurysm that left her partially paralyzed. Doctors told Andy it was best, and easiest, to put her in a nursing home. They said she would need too much care, and it would only put a strain on the family.
While Andy heard the doctors' suggestion, he couldn't help but remember those four words he cemented into his wedding vows to Donna: "For better or worse."
Andy refused to listen to the doctors' orders; he had a different plan in mind for his beloved wife.
Donna is now 73 years old and bound to a wheelchair. But wait until you see what she's been doing around the world for the past three decades, all thanks to her husband, who is just as lovestruck today as he was when he asked her for that piece of gum.
