Jessica Seinfeld Shares Why She And Jerry Gave Son Minimalist Flip Phone For Graduation

Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld got an unconventional, yet intentional gift for their youngest son’s high school graduation — a flip phone. “Our youngest son Shepherd graduated from high school yesterday. As I posted earlier in my stories, we gave him a flip phone for graduation in hopes he will turn in his smartphone,” Jessica wrote in an Instagram post.

“Many of you have asked if this is his first phone — I wish! If I knew then what I know now, I would’ve waited until age 14 to give him a smartphone (he got handed down an old one at age 12, for the bus ride to school in the Bronx).”

“In the last two slides is a phone my friend Lisa just told me about @thelightphone. Very curious about this -does anyone have one? (2nd pic by our friend Peter Hermann ♥️),” she concluded the post. In one of the slides, the flip phone is described as a “minimalist” device that has an “OLED screen” with “no addictive apps.”

In the profile for The Light Phone’s Instagram page, it says that the device is “designed to be used as little as possible.” The website’s about page explains that “Light was born as an alternative to the tech monopolies that are fighting more and more aggressively for our time & attention. Light creates tools that respect you. Objects that empower you to be your best self. Technology intentionally designed to be used as little as possible. Things that serve you, not the other way around.”

One person commented: “Love the light phone! Got it for our first kiddo, and our second is getting one this summer!”

“A good idea, this phone!” another person said. “New research says under 16’s are not age appropriate for social media, I work with teens and I absolutely agree!”
