John Whitbred couldn't believe it. He and his fiancée were supposed to get married in weeks. Then she dumped him out of the blue after two and a half years together.
"She said she didn't feel the same way when we first met and she hasn't been happy or herself the last month or so," he told ABC News.
The jilted groom was left with his all-inclusive honeymoon vacation package and a broken heart. Whitbred says he has no hard feelings toward his ex-fiancée.
"Of course it was hard. The fact that's driving me is that I'm glad she did it when she did it. She's done the right thing. You don't want to be with someone if that's how they feel about you," he said.
Whitbred couldn't get a refund for the vacation so he came up with a crazy idea: auction it off. Whitbred would donate anything over the trip's retail value to a cancer charity for men. What he didn't expect was for so many people to be interested.
"It's never been about the money. I thought it would give someone an opportunity to go on a cheap holiday. I never thought it would get this response," he said.
Eventually, Whitbred was able to find a travel companion in Kelly Hood. The two strangers traveled to the Dominican Republic together and got to share a new, adventurous experience.
