Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have some amazing news: The pair is expecting their first baby together! This is also the first child for each of them.
The news has not been officially confirmed, but the couple is notoriously private, and it's unlikely they will address the pregnancy publicly anytime soon.
Page Six has reported, "The very private pair have been keeping a low profile during the pandemic and have been quarantining at their home in Los Angeles. The source tells us that Mara, who has recently been spotted wearing baggy clothes to cover her bump, may be as far as six months along in her pregnancy."
The publication also notes that representatives for both Joaquin and Rooney have refused multiple attempts to confirm the news.
Rooney and Joaquin originally met in 2013 on the set of the Spike Jonze film Her, but they didn't begin dating until several years later, in 2018.
Joaquin had previously told Vanity Fair that he wasn't sure if Rooney even liked him when they first met.
"He believed Mara despised him during the making of Her but later learned she was just shy and actually liked him too. 'She's the only girl I ever looked up on the internet,' he says. 'We were just friends, email friends. I'd never done that. Never looked up a girl online.'"
This obviously changed pretty rapidly once they got to know one another, and Rooney and Joaquin announced their engagement in 2019. A source told Page Six that they celebrated at the We Care Spa in Desert Hot Springs, California, and that "Joaquin and his lady love are down for some R&R, sipping juices and a few colonics . . . good times!"
In 2018, Us Weekly reported that the two were very much in love, but that they weren't sure about marriage. A friend of the couple said, "They're never going to get married because they think marriage is too mainstream. Joaquin transforms all his girlfriends into being holistic, vegan, spiritual and into saving the world."
The friend also added that Rooney and Joaquin are really happy when it's just the two of them together: "They don't really like to go out. They mainly just like to be with each other as the two of them. They're in their own bubble."
Rooney Mara has been acting for years and is probably best known by mainstream audiences for her role in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. She also starred in 2015's Carol and received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. Additional film credits include Side Effects, Lion, and Mary Magdalene.
Joaquin also has enjoyed a long career in Hollywood. As the younger brother of the late River Phoenix, Joaquin has been in the spotlight most of his life. Of course, many people know that his brother River died three days after Joaquin's birthday in 1993, after suffering a drug overdose. Joaquin stepped back from acting for several years following the death of his brother.
Joaquin stepped back into acting in 1995, when he was cast opposite Nicole Kidman in To Die For. Since then, he has made a multitude of films, and he tends to gravitate toward challenging roles that explore darker humanity's darker experiences.
He and Rooney are notoriously private, but based on what we have all seen from them, it's highly likely they are thrilled about the pregnancy. Earlier this year, the actor wept as he told Rooney "I love you" during his Golden Globes acceptance speech.
