One important rule of marriage is that you should always clear plans with your spouse. Even though John Legend and Chrissy Teigen seem like a flawless couple online, that's one thing that John — who just ended his second season on The Voice — hasn't mastered just yet.
John joined The Voice in its 16th season. As you know, each judge works with their team and hopes that one of their contestants will be the last one standing at the end of the competition. This was the first season without Adam Levine taking a chair, so plenty of people watched to see who'd reign as champion. This year, John's final contestant was 38-year-old Katie Kadan. Blake Shelton's final contestant was Ricky Duran, Kelly Clarkson worked with Jake Hoot, and Gwen Stefani was pushing for Rose Short to win season 17.
As John's wife, Chrissy knows that the finale of any show is a big deal. Except the host and chef didn't get any warning that the whole cast would be watching the show unfold on television at John and Chrissy's house, and that it was the celebration of the finale of the show. So she wasn't prepared with a celebratory dinner. Or even cake.
Chrissy was completely unaware that any of these plans had been made. So she took to Twitter to sound off about the situation. "I didn’t know tonight was the voice finale. John invited everyone to dinner at the house after and I’m really fng mad because I didn’t make a fing FINALE meal. I would have gotten a cake or something too?? Who the f*** does this? U don’t win the voice then eat short ribs," she tweeted. Of course, it was a little funny. It seems like this is a big communication problem that many of Chrissy's fans can relate to in regard to their own relationships.
"It sounds dumb yes but this is VERY john. I am always in charge of doing the fun, extra s**t and he has no idea how much I plan normally and he’s like 'no it’s fine they just wanna have dinner' but it’s literally the finale of their show??? And I have no ice cream truck," she continued. A lot of people assumed that Chrissy accidentally spoiled the finale, but she didn't. She just knew that a winner would be in her home that day, and that it was short ribs on the menu. She extended her vent a little more, giving fans insight as to how John usually schedules things. Chrissy believes she's usually the one who's in charge of the fun stuff.
She understood that many of her fans might not "get it," but even though she's a celebrity herself, it doesn't mean that Chrissy still doesn't get a little starstruck. She knows that The Voice has some big names (her husband included) and wanted to make sure the night was special.
Chrissy even screen-capped their text exchange. "Lol I’m serious I’m laughing but I’m f***ing pissed," she added. No matter what, any sort of dinner cooked or prepared by Chrissy Teigen would be finale-worthy, but as Chrissy Teigen? She might not realize that.
She also understood the importance of a finale. It's a big deal to close out such a huge season. And since she had no clue who'd end up winning, it was a big night for her as well. That's why this was a big deal — if it were just any other show this season, maybe her first plan would have been good enough.
At the time when she realized she had a quick party to plan, Chrissy was reportedly lounging around in a robe. It seems like the perfect thing to wear for someone who simply isn't prepared. Still, she had the time to tweet out a few more zingers against John, like how he wouldn't deserve a winner's cake anyway after what he put her through.
Keep in mind, this isn't a reason to get worried. The couple, who are the parents of two young children, still seem to be solid as a rock. The fact that they can openly talk about things like this is only proof that they're a united team. Sometimes, we all just get frustrated with our spouses.
They were able to get multiple cakes before the finale aired. It seems like Chrissy ordered a few of her own that were blank, while John brought one that read "John's Solution Cake." You have to admit, that's pretty funny. "I ordered like 5 milk bar cakes before john’s one cake got here from the SAME place and he thinks he is some f***ing hero," she said. At least he took action when he realized his wife was scrambling to make sure everything worked out.
Chrissy also wanted to make it clear that while she knew they'd be over, she didn't know it'd be the finale. So it's kind of like she was expecting a small gathering of friends and then realized she'd have to pump up the event to make it bridal shower worthy just hours before the guests would arrive. It's a frustrating situation.
While the event was probably lovely, Chrissy makes a big point when she's discussing this relationship flaw. Everyone has different ways of communicating with each other, and sometimes it's just better to repeat and confirm information just to make sure everyone's on the same page. Chrissy and John both have a lot on their hands, so it makes sense as to why this information would have completely slipped.
Maybe John can invest in a household calendar or wipe-off board for the holidays. That way, he can map out his itinerary for Chrissy and the rest of the family to easily see. Making big changes like this can't be easy, but it's not impossible. Sometimes, even a small tool can help revolutionize the way we organize our week.
It's also good to know that Chrissy is open when discussing her own personal responsibilities within the marriage. It can be difficult to always be the go-to when it comes to planning fun events and getting friends together. These tasks take up a lot of mental energy, and oftentimes, women like Chrissy never openly volunteered to take these jobs on.
Women are often really great with multitasking, so people just assume we'll be able to handle everything. We do manage to get it done, but it'd be nice if, for once, a spouse took over. John could have easily told Chrissy that he wanted something big for the finale and planned a menu in advance.
He's fully capable of doing this all on his own. So perhaps he could be a little apologetic toward his wife. Even though the event has come and gone (and sounds like it was a lot of fun), next time this happens, maybe he can try to be a little more take-charge from the beginning. Otherwise, Chrissy is going to suffer from some massive burnout.
