John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have a love that will never break.
The couple has been through a devastating ordeal in the last few weeks. On September 30, Chrissy revealed that the couple had lost their third child after weeks of suffering complications. The couple had announced the pregnancy in mid-August.
Since the heartbreaking announcement, Chrissy and John have understandably kept to themselves. Their absence is felt by the many people who have felt welcomed into their lives throughout the years. Some fans could relate to their devastation personally. Others just wanted to see something good happen to good people.
On Wednesday, John made his first public appearance since the loss. No one would have blamed the heartbroken musician for skipping out, but instead he did something amazing.
John delivered a powerful and emotional performance at the Billboard Music Awards. The EGOT winner performed his single, "Never Break." He dedicated the tearful performance to Chrissy.
Following the performance, the show's host and John's fellow Voice judge Kelly Clarkson took a moment to admire John and Chrissy's strength.
John Legend did something incredibly powerful at the Billboard Music Awards. The EGOT-winning musician performed at the show, his first public appearance since he and wife Chrissy Teigen shared the news of their pregnancy loss.
Chrissy and John shared the news on September 30.
"We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we've never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn't enough," Chrissy shared in an emotional Instagram post.
"We never decide on our babies' names until the last possible moment after they're born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever."
"To our Jack – I'm so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn't give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you," she continued.
"Thank you to everyone who has been sending us positive energy, thoughts, and prayers. We feel all of your love and truly appreciate you.
"We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we've been able to experience. But everyday can't be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it."
On Wednesday, John performed his single "Never Break." He began by dedicating the song to Chrissy. The pain that the couple has endured in these last few weeks was palpable in the performance and left many viewers in tears.
"We will never break / Built on a foundation / Strong enough to stay / We will never break," John sang tearfully.
"As the water rises / And the mountains shake / Our love will remain."
After the performance, host and fellow Voice judge Kelly Clarkson delivered some heartfelt words about the couple.
Kelly commended John for performing and sent "all my love to you and Chrissy."
"I want to take a moment to talk about a friend who inspires me on the daily," Kelly said.
"Not only as a musician, a songwriter, but as a human. John Legend is one of my favorite people on this planet and it's easy for us all to feel that way about them because he and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world — the highs and the lows."
"Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time," Kelly continued. You could truly feel her admiration for his ability to perform.
"I'm thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us for the very special performance, possibly my favorite of the night."
The performance truly touched fans of the couple. Their personalities really make people feel like they are part of their world, and their pain has been felt as deeply as their joy. Though critics picked apart the couple's manner of sharing the news, doing so helped others who have experienced the same to heal.
The pregnancy was already an emotional roller coaster for the couple. Chrissy didn't know she was pregnant until after undergoing surgery to remove her breast implants. Furthermore, the couple conceived their baby naturally after believing they couldn't conceive without IVF treatments.
Complications at the end of the pregnancy led to Chrissy having to put many projects on pause. She stopped filming Chrissy's Court for Quibi. She also indefinitely postponed her third cookbook. We hope that, in time, Chrissy can return to the projects that bring her joy.
