Doctors Tell Mom Her Cancer Is Back, Then They Discover 4 Babies In Her Womb

We all know that moms are some of the toughest people on the planet.

That said, we think special credit might go to Campbell, KY, mom Kayla Gaytan, who has fought harder than anyone should have to for her family.

That's because Kayla already mom to two precious kiddos, was diagnosed a year ago with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a rare cancer of the immune system.

Like the brave mama who was diagnosed with breast cancer halfway through her pregnancy, Kayla fought the cancer for the sake of her kids and husband, Charles.

She won after five months of chemo, but fortunately this tough mom kept plenty of energy in reserve — the fight of her life was still ahead of her.

Fate was about to hand the Gaytan family two more major challenges that they never could have expected: quadruplets, and another battle with the mom's disease.

In January 2016, 29-year-old Kentucky mom Kayla Gaytan rang in the New Year with her two kiddos and her husband Charles.

But within the month, she would have devastating news: Kayla had a rare lymphatic cancer called Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The disease is one of the more treatable cancers if caught early, but it can be aggressive.

The most common symptoms are large swellings of the lymph nodes, especially in the neck, groin, and armpits.

Other symptoms include general swelling in the whole body, fevers, and a phenomenon known as "Hodgkin's itch," which causes an itchy feeling all over.

Kayla fought hard against her cancer, and immediately dove into chemo treatments.

Just five months after her diagnosis, her fight seemed successful; doctors told her that the cancer was in remission.

However, they also warned her that she and Charles most likely wouldn't be able to expand their family the old-fashioned way, because the chemo had likely affected her ability to conceive.

Given the doctors' warnings, Charles and Kayla assumed that there wasn't much of a chance that they would accidentally conceive so soon after chemo.

So imagine their surprise when Kayla went in for a doctor's appointment and discovered that she was pregnant.

What's more, the sonogram revealed four tiny bundles of joy — she was pregnant with an incredibly rare set of naturally conceived quadruplets.

Despite beating almost insurmountable odds with their pregnancy, the Gaytans still had another shock ahead.

Their four little ones were growing well and seemed healthy, but Kayla was starting to experience another, more sinister set of symptoms.

She was feeling the telltale "Hodgkin's itch" throughout her body and was starting to have swollen lymph nodes all over again.

In November, the doctors confirmed the news that Kayla and Charles had been dreading: the cancer was back.

Kayla had wanted to try to keep the pregnancy going until the 34th week, since multiple births tend to be on the smaller side.

But at the tail end of 2016, doctors decided to move ahead, delivering the quads at 30 weeks.

Despite coming into the world a bit early, all four babies are happy and healthy in the hospital. They have been christened Victoria, Lillian, Michael, and Charles.

Meanwhile, the family experiences the moment with bittersweet joy, as Kayla must start chemotherapy again and will likely be in treatment for about a year and a half.

Still, she told Us Magazine that she plans to fight hard. "I have six kids, and I have my husband, and they’re really what’s pushing me forward," she said. "I wanna show them how strong their mom can be."
