Kelly Clarkson Gets Real About The Struggles Of Touring With Her Kids: ‘I’m Not An Absentee Mom’

Kelly Clarkson is a pop and country music powerhouse. Nearly two decades after winning hearts across the country as the first American Idol champ, she's a certified force in her own right. She's taking her talents on the road this year by embarking on her Meaning of Life tour, synonymous with her 2017 album. The 28-show tour will go from late January through late March 2019; joining her for support are Kelsea Ballerini and her mentee and season 14 winner of The Voice, Brynn Cartelli.

This tour marks the first time Kelly has headlined a tour in over three years. A lot has changed during that short amount of time, though. Kelly wrote two children's books; she lent her voice to several animated projects; she's coached two talents to victory on The Voice; and she also gave birth to her son, Remington Alexander. This tour will kick off an exciting year for the country songstress, but it does come with challenges. The mom of four will be taking her two youngest children and husband Brandon Blackstock on the road with her.

Kelly Clarkson has an exciting year ahead of her. After crushing it and guiding two singers to victory as a coach on The Voice, she'll be returning for season 16.

She'll be voicing a character in the upcoming UglyDolls movie, due out in May. Her character, Moxy, is a fun-loving, curious goofball.

She also has a talk show coming out this fall! The Kelly Clarkson Show has been described as a variety talk show that will combine music, celebrity guests, and games for some lighthearted fun.

Before she gets to enjoy the excitement of those projects, she'll be seeing one of her previous ones come to life. Kelly's year begins with embarking on her Meaning of Life tour in support of her 2017 album by the same name.

This album has been incredibly important to Kelly. In her press release announcing the tour, Kelly wrote, "Meaning of Life is the album I always wanted to make and I am so excited to finally be able to tour it! Even while recording it, I couldn’t wait for people to experience the music live, to not only hear it, but feel it."

The tour will feature two guest stars. Kelsea Ballerini and Kelly's The Voice season 14 mentee, Brynn Cartelli, will appear.

Kelly's kids will also be joining her on tour. River Rose is 4 years old and Remington Alexander is 2 years old.

Kelly cited motherhood as the reason why she's been away from the touring life for so long. She explained to E! News, "We have four kids, so it took a minute to get here again." She references River and Remy, as well as husband Brandon Blackstock's children from a previous marriage, Seth and Savannah.

Touring with two young children can't be easy. Kelly admitted that she found herself in over her head when she was on the Piece by Piece tour with River Rose, who was just a year old at the time.

Kelly is open about what she feels she did wrong at that time. "The last time I toured, I was trying to be supermom and a pop star at the same time and that was really hard."

Kelly revealed that fans shouldn't be surprised if River or Remy make an appearance onstage. It's part of her way of trying to balance her two worlds.

"The babies come on tour," Kelly explains. "It's kind of hard. I'm not like, an absentee mom, so it's like I'm all in every time they're around. So they're coming out on certain shows every once in a while."

It wouldn't be the first time one of Kelly's kids appeared on stage. Kelly's stepson, Seth, came out with her during the Piece by Piece tour.

Kelly's kids will have unforgettable memories of watching their mama rock the house night after night. We can't wait to see what the Meaning of Life tour will bring for Kelly and her family.
