For those diagnosed with hard-to-treat diseases, life comes to a standstill. The patient and the patient's family's main preoccupation becomes finding an organ donor, should one be needed. Individuals suffering from liver or kidney disease may feel like they've scoured the Earth for a replacement, but with no luck.
Brett Epps had no problem finding people willing to donate a kidney after his diagnosis, but finding a match was a different story. No one, from his friends to his family to even his former wrestling coach, could give him the organ he needed.
But secretly, against his wishes, Epps' girlfriend, Alex, got tested — she was a match! She broke the news to him, and doctors were able to successfully make one of her kidneys his.
But they would "become one" in more than one way. Epps saw the perfect opportunity to make their love and union official. During a family photo, Epps quietly handed his girlfriend a small black box. Inside? An engagement ring!
The two are now happy to be engaged and healthy. The Epps family can barely believe their future daughter-in-law's generosity, but for Alex, the donation was a no-brainer!
