Five-year-old Lexi Shymanski, of Prince George, British Columbia, was in the backseat of the car with her baby brother, Peter, when her mom dozed off at the steering wheel. Mom Angela was driving with the kids back home from Calgary, when she crashed the car into a tree on a cliffside road.

The car fell down a 40-foot embankment. Lexi woke up, still in her car seat, with a scratch on her face. She saw that her mom was slumped over, unconscious, and that her 10-week-old brother was shrieking.

Lexi realized that their car couldn't be seen from the roadside — but knew that she had to get help. Somehow, she managed to escape from the car and climb up the embankment barefoot. Upon reaching the road, she flagged down passing vehicles. Fortunately, the first driver who stopped to help was a paramedic.

They were airlifted to a hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, where baby Peter was treated for swelling in the brain, Lexi for minor injuries, and mom for multiple fractures, broken ribs, and liver damage. If Lexi hadn't acted fast like she did, both her mom and brother would have been left paralyzed, or worse — died.

"It's crazy. I can only remember one or two times where she got out of her five-point harness previously. She somehow got out, adrenaline or whatever," Angela Shymanski told Metro UK. It was later revealed that medics and firemen had to use ropes to maneuver on the embankment, while Lexi did it barefoot.

They are now all back home from the hospital. Dad Travis has had to take a leave of absence from work to take care of the kids. Angela, a swimming instructor, is taking time to recover, and still has a long way to go before life returns to normal.
