Monroe Cannon has shut down TikTok's high note challenge, with a little help from her mom. Mariah Carey's 8-year-old daughter gets her mom's diva-like gestures down in the video, which Mariah also shared on Twitter.
If you're not familiar with the High Note challenge, let us catch you up. The challenge seems to have started from people trying to imitate the high notes hit by Idina Menzel in Frozen II's signature track, "Into the Unknown." Thousands on TikTok have tried replicating the insanely high notes.
If anyone can hit high notes, it's Mariah. The accomplished singer has proven she's got the range time and time again. In fact, Mariah made that clear when reposting Monroe's adorable video.
Mariah quoted a tweet where a fan account recalled critics slamming her as a studio artist who couldn't deliver live. The tweet also includes video from Mariah's 1992 MTV Unplugged performance, where she hits the whistle notes in "Emotions" flawlessly. We don't know if Mariah's little diva has inherited her vocal chops, but we can't wait to find out.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's 8-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, love TikTok as much as any other kid. The twins have made a number of appearances on their mom's account. It seems like the little family has a lot of fun with the app.
Mariah wasn't on the app last summer, but she did try one of its viral challenges. Mariah staged a video to make it look like she popped the top off a bottle with her five-octave range. It was a hilarious take on the Bottle Cap challenge and a reminder that Mariah's range is not to be underestimated.
Last month, Monroe paid tribute to her mom's pipes with a TikTok post of her own. In the video, she lip-syncs to the whistle notes from "Emotions" and captions the clip "my mom." Then there's an ear-shattering screech, which she captioned, "everyone else." The shady joke is exactly what we'd expect from Mariah's little diva-in-training.
This time, Mariah and Monroe teamed up to tackle the High Note challenge. The challenge seems to have been inspired by Idina Menzel's impressive high notes in "Into the Unknown" from Frozen II. People have also tried to hit notes by Christina Aguilera and Ariana Grande.
Monroe seems to be killing it as she imitates her mom's diva-like singing gestures. As the camera pans back, you see Monroe is lip-syncing while Mariah hits the high notes.
"Mommy!" the annoyed little girl yells.
"What? You said to do the high notes!" Mariah replies.
Mariah took the opportunity to share the video on Twitter with a bit of a flex. She quote-tweeted the video while retweeting a fan account's recollection of critics underestimating Mariah's vocal abilities. She shut down the idea she couldn't sing live with a 1992 appearance on MTV Unplugged.
Mariah is definitely keeping the music in the family. In November 2018, she shared a video of Monroe and Moroccan singing backup on her Christmas classic, "All I Want for Christmas Is You." The kids dance happily as she belts out the hit.
Roc and Roe have also sung on a song with their mom. They sing backup along with another child for Mariah's song "The Star" from a Christmas movie of the same name. They were just 6 years old at the time and even appear in the video. You can tell that star power is in their DNA from how natural they are in front of a camera.
Mariah also brings the kids onstage with her during performances. At a recent Las Vegas concert, she brought them out as she sang "Always Be My Baby." It seems like they love being onstage with their mom.
Mariah admitted that she's surprised how much of her music her kids know, despite how often they see her perform. "They love 'Always Be My Baby,' 'All I Want for Christmas Is You,' 'We Belong Together.' They surprise me with the songs that they know," she told Billboard.
"They’ve been to a lot of the shows — you always think they’re on their iPads rather than paying attention, but I guess they’re paying attention!"
Mariah is being recognized for her talent and unforgettable hits in a major way. Last month, it was announced that she'll be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year.
"This is truly one of the greatest honors of my career," Mariah tweeted upon learning the news. "I’m so proud and humbled to be in the company of such legendary songwriters — both previously inducted as well as the incredible class of 2020!"
Although she's known for being a diva and is treated accordingly, Mariah doesn't ever want her kids to take things for granted. It's a major focus of her parenting.
"It’s hard, but I try to keep them grounded so they don’t think everything is just handed to them," she told People.
"Right now it’s like, ‘I want this,’ and I’m like, ‘You’re asking me for something that costs $20.’ I can’t even imagine having, like, one dollar as a kid because we didn’t have money going around," she explained. "So they have to appreciate those things."
She also maintains a great co-parenting relationship with ex-husband Nick Cannon, who shares her values. "They’re a lot, but they give me so much love in return. I wouldn’t be the same person without them," Mariah said of her kids.
"I think Nick and I have done pretty well in co-parenting, staying friends with each other so that we can talk."
