If you’re going trick-or-treating with your children this year, there’s no fun in showing up in your usual clothes. Wearing regular attire can break the kids' immersion in the holiday and make you stick out like a sore thumb.
So, why not spice things up a little? Having a good Halloween costume is one thing, but having a matching costume with someone else makes the night even more fun, especially if that person is your daughter.
Dressing up in matching mom and daughter Halloween costumes will make for amazing photos, memories, and may even get them some extra candy if you’re lucky. So many matching costume ideas are for couples — Chucky and Tiffany, Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, Barbie and Ken, the list of famous fictitious couples is endless — but daughter and mother Halloween costumes are a little less common.
Here are a handful of fun and not-so-scary matching mommy and daughter Halloween costumes you and your little girl can don this year. Whether you’re going the homemade route or a store-bought one-and-done purchase, with some little details that will really bring the characters to life.
Ariel & Flounder
There are a few routes you can take with The Little Mermaid's Ariel because she has so many lovely dresses, feet or no feet. An original tail-and-all look, her casual dress, her Disney Princess team dress, Halle Bailey’s blue dress, the pink dress, and don’t get me started on how easy it is to find a wig or two.
Whichever Ariel you choose, you can also Disney-bound it for a more casual and comfy look, finding a green skirt and purple top, and maybe a shell in your hair for good measure.
So that’s Ariel done, now onto your favorite fish friend. To turn this into a mom and daughter Halloween outfit, you'll need a little Flounder. You can find Flounder costumes for pretty much every age group, from infant, to toddler, then to tween, but let’s face it, this is the perfect costume for a baby. If you’re going the homemade route, any yellow dress or onesie with blue details will do wonders, with some crafted fins, and fishy face paint. Just remember to bring a dinglehopper for some emergency hair detangling.
Barbie & Skipper
Unless you’re going for a hyper authentic Barbie look based on a specific doll, anything Barbie-land is doable with your pinkest and most glittery outfit. Literally anything goes so long as you look sparkly — and a little bit plastic.
If you’re interested in the OG Barbie, or Margot Robbie Barbie, then just take a blond wig, a skater dress, some vintage accessories, and your brightest pink lipstick. You can even bring a heel and a Birkenstock for the ultimate movie reference. Cowgirl Barbie, mechanic Barbie, astronaut Barbie, you can pretty much pick any career, and you can make a Barbie costume out of it.
If in doubt, boxed-up Barbie is also iconic. Forget Ken, pair Barbie this Halloween with a little sister such as Skipper, Stacie, or Chelsea, who all have their own styles. Any pink, blue, and purple outfits will work, but if you want to go totally authentic, Skipper has brown hair with a purple streak in her hair, and usually wears a lot of checkered shirts and skirts. For girls who are a little bit more alt than traditional, this is more of a cool and edgy look.
Morticia & Wednesday Addams
Time to get a little spooky! The Addams Family makes for classic costume inspiration for most of the family, but no two characters are more loved than Tish and Wednesday. This is also a goth girls dream as they probably already have dark hair and a cool attitude to boot.
Morticia is one of the easiest costumes on this list, as any long-sleeved gothic dress and long black wig will be perfect. Add a rose from Gomez and some vampy lipstick, and you’re good to go. Most versions of Morticia are similar, but if you want some extra oomph, go for the '90s movie Tish with tassels and glowing eye makeup.
Your kid has a little more wiggle room when it comes to Wednesday, as the Tim Burton Wednesday has three iconic outfits: her classic white-collared pilgrim-style dress (much like the original TV show and the movies), her school uniform, and her iconic prom dress. The pilgrim dress is probably the easiest to make yourself, as that Peter Pan collar never goes out of style. For extra points, learn the dance moves! Accessorize with a fake blade of some sort, and a chilling stare.
Cruella & Dalmatian
Inspiration from 101 Dalmatians is another costume set that’s perfect for a mother and baby, as you can carry your little pup in the crook of your arm. But there are Dalmatian costumes for any age. Add some whiskers with a little face paint or eyeliner, a little black nose, and boom: there’s Lucky, Perdita, or Rolly. If you’re making the costume from scratch, a white onesie with some fabric-pen spots will do nicely.
But let’s get to the more glam part: Ms De Vil. You can go old school with the 1961 101 Dalmatians classic design, or modernize it with a bit of Emma Stone Cruella edge. There’s actually several Cruellas to take inspo from: Once Upon a Time, The Descendants, Glen Close, whatever takes your fancy.
Whoever you choose, a black dress, fake fur, black and white wig, and long cigarette holder will do the trick. Go ham with your makeup, as Cruella is known for her scarlet lips, winged liner, and wildly arched eyebrows. Pair everything with a smirk, and a little evil strut.
The Wicked Witch & Dorothy
A classic that never fails, if you don’t mind a mountain of green face paint, that is. The witch from The Wizard of Oz is the most basic, albeit fun Halloween costume, and The Wicked Witch of the West is the blueprint of all movie witches.
You can’t shake a stick at any Halloween store without finding everything you need for the witch: face paint, the hat, fake nails, and a long black dress. You can even mix green eye shadow with your foundation to create a smoother surface If you’re going for a less scary version of Elphaba, go with the Wicked version, who has much softer features, and a more sympathizing backstory.
And now for Dorothy: a checkered blue and white dress, a white blouse, hair in pigtails and ribbons, and some ruby red Mary Janes, makes the perfect Dorothy. A blue dress is actually a pretty good investment for future costumes too as there are quite a few characters it will fit for, such as Beauty and the Beast’s Belle, and Alice (in Wonderland).
The icing on the cake for Dorothy, other than the glittery slippers, is a little Toto to carry around, which will comfort them whenever it gets a little too dark and spooky that night.
