Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Share Holiday Greetings And Somehow Enrage Brits While Doing So

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently on a six-week break from royal duties, but that doesn't mean the pair will let their popular Instagram account, sussexroyal, go dormant during that time. The two recently took to what might be their favorite platform to share how they will be celebrating the "Twelve Days of Christmas." Sounds cute, right?

Well, it would be cute, but apparently their language, which seems sweet and sincere enough, has enraged some British citizens. Why? Because they use the phrase "holiday season," which many of their British followers have deemed "too American."

Well.

One commenter fired back, "I'm sorry but its called Christmas not festive holidays."

Another followed up with, "Christmas, Christmas, Christmas! Repeat after me… Happy…Christ…mas!"

The reaction is curious, considering that, you know, not everyone in England is Christian or celebrates Christmas in the first place. For example, there are over 250,000 Jews in England, and 5% of the population is Muslim.

The caption for the allegedly offensive post begins sweetly, with Meghan and Harry noting, "With the festive holiday season upon us, it’s also a reminder to reflect on those in need – those who may feel lonely, hungry, homeless, or may be experiencing the holidays for the first time without loved ones."

The caption goes on to read: "It’s an important time of year to help those around you who may be less fortunate, or who would appreciate even the smallest act of kindness.

"Continuing our monthly tradition of highlighting accounts that do good, and inspired by the 'Twelve Days of Christmas' – we have selected twelve organisations caring for those in need – especially at this time of year."

And they round out the caption with an inclusive request: "There are, thankfully, so many organisations around the world doing good on global and grassroots levels, many of which are not on Instagram.

"Check out the accounts we have chosen and please share those in your own communities that are making a difference.

"We would love to hear about the ones that inspire you – so please tell us and add your country’s flag!"

Of course, this is hardly the first time Meghan and Harry have weathered criticism from a public that can't seem to decide how it feels about them. Right off the bat, they were accused of stealing their Instagram handle, sussexroyal, from a citizen.

And then in August, a low-key uproar unfolded when the two unfollowed the entire royal family on Instagram. No matter that they also unfollowed everyone and announced that they were beginning a new monthly tradition of following only the organizations they highlight each month. It was dra-ma-tic.

One of the organizations that Meghan and Harry are highlighting this month is Centrepoint, which Prince William is a patron of. William took over the role from his late mother, Princess Diana, and it makes sense that Harry would also want to lend his support.

And Meghan also included an American charity in the list. She chose the Los Angeles Mission, which helps the homeless population in LA. Her mother, Doria, still lives in the city, and it is assumed that Meghan and Harry will be visiting while on their six-week break.

This isn't the only Sussex announcement that has ruffled British feathers this holiday season (too soon?). Meghan and Harry are also skipping the traditional royal holiday celebrations this year, including walking to Sandringham with the Queen.

While members of the public may not love the plan, the Queen doesn't seem to mind. The official statement from the palace read, "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland. This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen."

However the Brits feel about the phrase "holiday season," it is true that this isn't the first time Meghan and Harry have been accused of sounding a little "too American" on Instagram. Earlier this year, British followers were upset that the pair used American spellings of words, and even took issue with their recent post wishing followers a "Happy Thanksgiving."
