Mom Admits She Still Breastfeeds Her 2- And 5-Year-Old Daughters And People Are Outraged

Sophie Mei Lan recently stirred up a controversy online after she went on British talk show This Morning to discuss her decision to breastfeed both her 2-year-old and 5-year-old daughters.

Sophie and her husband, Chris, have a great relationship, but Chris actually sleeps alone in their bed every single night. Why? Because Sophie sleeps in the girls' room in order to breastfeed them whenever they want.

The 29-year-old mom assumed that her older daughter, Jasmine, would stop breastfeeding when she had her younger baby, Arianna, but Jasmine wanted to keep nursing.

Sophie didn't want to stop either of her daughters, so she now feeds both Jasmine and Arianna.

After the parents went on the show to discuss their unusual sleeping habits, people started sharing their opinions online. The comments range from outraged to impressed.

Check out what Sophie had to say about her breastfeeding decisions below.

When Jasmine was born, Sophie actually had no intention of becoming a breastfeeding mom at all. She even bought formula.

She ended up deciding to breastfeed after all, but it didn't come to her naturally at all.

Luckily, she had a lot of support to get her through the rough days.

Sophie also explained that since she struggles with anxiety and depression, breastfeeding really anchored her.

Sophie kept breastfeeding Jasmine for the next few years. When she got pregnant with her second child, she assumed Jasmine would just stop on her own once baby number two came along.

But that didn't happen — Jasmine wanted to keep nursing.

Sophie explains that she didn't want to stop Jasmine from nursing. As she does with all other aspects of parenting, she went with the flow and let her daughters' needs determine her actions.

Breastfeeding both of her girls has also helped Sophie build a stronger bond with her kids.

At first, there wasn't much of a negative reaction from people about Sophie's decision. Now, though, as the girls have gotten older, people have started expressing disgust.

Jasmine, now 5, and Arianna, now 2, both still nurse. Arianna feeds 8 to 10 times a day, but Jasmine just feeds before bed to fall asleep.

Sophie and Chris sleep in separate rooms so that Sophie can nurse the girls during the night without waking Chris.

Some people have claimed Sophie is doing this for herself, but she vehemently denies that, explaining she just does what's best for her daughters.

When it comes to weaning, Sophie plans to let her daughters stop naturally.

As she's continued her research, Sophie has come to understand that mammals traditionally nurse for 1 to 7 years, so she doesn't see any reason to force her girls to stop.

And Chris is totally supportive. He knows women will be judged either way, so he thinks the best thing to do is whatever's right for each individual family.

These parents definitely know people may not agree with them, but they don't take the criticism to heart.
