Mom Insists ‘The Sex Talk’ Should Happen Before Kindergarten

Most parents either wait to have "the birds and the bees" talk when kids are teenagers, or in many cases just hope they'll figure it out on their own.

However, mom-of-two and blogger Megan Ayres insists that other parents should follow her lead and teach kids about sex before they even hit puberty. In fact, she thinks they should be made aware even before they start school.

She says, "I want to teach my children about sex as soon as possible. I want them to understand it's an 'adult thing' just like there are adult words and drinks."

Her logic is that if children know about sex early on, they will be more responsible and less curious about it as they grow up. This is something Megan has learned from personal experience.

Megan, 22, recounts how her parents were shy about the topic during her childhood and how she learned about the topic from a misguided 6- or 7-year-old friend. The mom attributes her introduction to sex as part of the reason why she "was extremely curious about boys as a teen." It won't hurt to mention that she grew up in a conservative Mormon family in Utah. She has since renounced her religion.

Megan and her husband RJ have two daughters. She writes that they have both decided to tell them about where babies come from before they started school. After all, she says, "The mystery of sex to children is like Santa or the tooth fairy: Once little kids learn the secret, they can't keep it to themselves."

She advocates for the use of biological terms when having the often awkward "talk" with kids in order to get the point across in the most simplistic and effective way possible.

This isn't the first time Megan has raised eyebrows. She happens to be 24 years younger than her husband, whom she met when she was 18. They've been together ever since.

They by all means appear to be a happy and functional family despite the age gap. Megan says, "Our age gap works amazingly for us."
